Özet: Barbados cherry (Malpighiaemarginata D.C.) is a cherry-like tropical plant species and sought-after in Central America, Caribbean countries (particularly in Barbados, Trinidad, and Tobago and Haiti) and Brazil. Having a red, pink or yellow color when fully ripe, although red is preferred, fruit is valued mostly for its rich vitamin C content which could be as high a 4% of fruit fresh weight. Several studies reported that in addition to vitamin C, fruit is a good source phytochemicals such as anthocyanins, phenolic compounds, and dietary carotenoids. Havinghigh vitamin C content, in addition to the use of ascorbic acid and antioxidant in food and feed constantly increase the demand for Barbados cherry. Brazil is the leading country in terms of production followed by Caribbean countries. Fruit’s fresh market is very limited due to its perishable nature, however, its products are sold worldwide at good prices. The fruit can only be grown under greenhouses in Turkey. No academic publication in Turkish addressing Barbados cherry exists to our knowledge; therefore, this reviewaims to introduce the fruit to Turkish scientists and whosoever interested.
