Özet: Drought is a meteorological origin natural disaster and one of the most important problems of today. The drought, which basically starts as a lack of precipitation, is constantly increasing its destructive effects on nature and all living life. In this study, the multi-temporal change of Atikhisar Dam Lake water area, which is located in the borders of Çanakkale Central District and the only water source of the region, was determined by satellite remote sensing images between 1984-2018 and the effect of meteorological drought on this change was investigated. In this context, change of meteorological drought in the region was examined by the cumulative deviation curve and standard precipitation index (SPI). All meteorological evaluations were made according to the 12-months water year calendar beginning at the beginning of October. The areal variations of the lake was determined by the normalized difference water index (NDWI) data set generated from Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) multispectral multi-temporal satellite images. In order to be compatible with the meteorological data, all images were obtained at the end of the dry season (i.e. water year) between 1984-2018. Thus, the effect of meteorological drought at the end of the 12-months water year on the water area determined by NDWI was investigated. The results show that not only the meteorological drought has effect on dam lake area change. Compared to cumulative deviation values, SPI meteorological drought index values was found to be more susceptible to annual changes of lake area and had a much higher and significant correlations with lake area values determined by NDWI.
