Özet: Gears are machine elements used in all branches of the industry to transmit power and movement. In this study, the minimum material volumes (MMV) of two different bevel gearboxes were determined based on the objective function by applying Genetic Algorithms (GA). Module, number of gear teeth and face with were determined as the variables in minimum material objective function and coded as chromosomes in the GA. Bending, wear and face with strengths were taken into account in design as constraint functions. The algorithm was checked with the determined various genetic operator values. For minimum material volume condition, the GA performance curves were constructed. The optimum solutions were found for minimum material volume of bevel gearboxes. These results were compared to those of analytical solutions and 17–18% reduction in material volume was achieved. In addition, the results showed that the GA can be used effectively in non-linear variables based problems.
