Özet: Bridge failures occur mostly due to local scour around bridge piers during floods. To better understand the scour and the resulting bridge failure mechanism, flow behavior should be accurately determined in the vicinity of piers. In recent years, mainly based on computational fluid dynamics, numerical modeling and evaluation of these data for the solution of similar problems, has become as an alternative tool. In this study, in order to investigate velocity distribution around rectangle shaped bridge abutment, three-dimensional numerical model was generated by using the FLOW 3D computer program. Modeling results were compared with experimental results in literature.
