Özet: The aim of the present study was to compare the play behaviours of 5-6 years old children attending to early childhood education programs in Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus TRNC . The two study groups of the research comprised of fifty children attending to kindergartens located in Pamukkale and Merkezefendi districts of Denizli province, Turkey, and thirty-five children attending to kindergartens in Lefkoşa province of TRNC. Among the five play types focused in the study, significant differences were identified in the social and solitary-passive play types. The analysis of the data revealed that the level of social and solitary-passive play behaviours of 5-6 years old preschool children living in TRNC was higher than the level of play behaviour of the ones living in Turkey. There was no significant difference in the level of rough, reticent and solitary-active types play behaviours of children included into the study groups. However, the study identified significant statistical differences in the level of rough and solitary-passive types of play between female and male preschool children living in Turkey. The average score of boys for rough and solitary-passive types of play was higher than girls’ average score for these types of play. The results of the study revealed no statistically significant gender differences in the social, rough, reticent, solitary-passive, and solitary-active types of play behaviour of preschool children living in TRNC
