Özet: The article aims to discuss the question of pantheism by reference to Bayle’s criticism of Spinoza’s substance monism. Essential to Bayle’s interpretation and criticism is the contention that Spinoza’s ontological identification of God and Nature has some inconsistencies and leads to certain absurdities in terms of predicating God of contradictory properties. Bayle also argues that Spinoza’s approach does not make justice to our basic intuitions about God inasmuch as it attributes imperfections to him. Considering Bayle’s criticism within the context of the contemporary debate on Spinoza’s metaphysics, it is argued that although some of the objections raised by Bayle can be sidestepped, his basic criticism seems to endure basically due to Spinoza’s failure to make a substantial distinction between God and the World.
