Özet: The fact that there are improvements that reduce labor pain and facilitate labor has revealed the concept of medicalization at birth. With medicalization, birth which should be done naturally, is seen as a risky event that needs to be intervened. Practices in labor such as electronic fetal monitoring, induction and episiotomy have increased, birth has started to be perceived as a risky act and it has become necessary to perform it in hospital environment. For this reason, medicalized deliveries have been started to be discussed and natural births and cesarean rates have been tried to be reduced. In this review, the literature information about medicalization practices used at birth, causes and consequences, and responsibilities of nurses and midwives were shared.
