Özet: Abstract The aim of this research is to determine the effect of reading comprehension skill on the academic achievement in mathematics at the second stage of Primary School. The population of research consists of students at the 6th grade at 71 state primary schools in Malatya. Its sample includes 300 students from schools at different socio-economical areas by selected using “stratified purposive sampling” method. Reading Comprehension Test and Mathematics Achievement Test were used for getting data for the research. Findings show that there was nearly high relation between the reading comprehension and mathematics achievement scores (r= 0,68); there was not a clear difference between reading comprehension skill and mathematics achievement according to gender variable and frequency of reading a book. There was a clear difference between reading comprehension skill and mathematics achievement according to the school’s socio-economical features. There have been variable suggestions from the results of the research.
