Özet: Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites among elementary school students and also determine the effect of health education to the prevalence of parasites. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on students attending to Yeniyurt, Beylikova, Eskişehir elementary school in a 2011-2012 (n:114, 91.9%) and 2012-2013 academic years (n:97, 96.1%). All collected samples were investigated in ESOGU Medicine Faculty Parasitology laboratory. All students were trained about basic hygiene practices about parasites by using visual tools and equipment in their classes. Results: The prevalence of intestinal parasites was 32.3% in first and 23.3% in second period. The distribution of the parasites found in the first period were Blastocystis hominis (18.18%), Giardia intestinalis (6.1%), Entamoeba coli (6.1%), Endolimax nana (3.0%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (2.0%) from stool samples, Enterobius vermicularis (6.4%), and Pentatrichomonas hominis (n=1) from cellophane-bants. Six of students participating both of the study periods (9.5%) had intestinal parasites. After the health education, there was no difference between the two study groups in terms of presence of parasites .Among the students having parasites in both of the study periods, students keeping animals in their homes, not going to nursery school, being under 10 years old and not washing hands regularly after meals and toilet had a higher prevalence of intestinal parasites. Conclusion: Diversifying the educational materials according to socio-demographic and cultural characteristics of students, using practical training styles and ensuring the continuity of education about intestinal parasites will be useful for the effectiveness of education.
