Özet: Value education in Turkey has become an important issue in recent research. Especially, national values have started to become evident at the value classifications. The values such as patriotism and Turkishness stand out among national values. In that sense, respecting the word which bears the name of their own nation and being proud of it are foremost national values among them. In this regard, the aim of this qualitative research is to identify pre-service elementary school teachers’ perceptions on “being a Turk” value, who are the first ones with a responsibility to teach the word Turk or feeling of Turkishness. A phenomenological method was conducted holding one-on-one interviews with 30 students studying in the department of elementary education in the faculty of education at Suleyman Demirel University. When we look at the findings of the current research; pre-service elementary school teachers consider the word Turk mostly an element of power (f=9), a symbol of race (f=6), and dignity (f=5), liken Turks to mostly wolf, lion and sea, believe that patriotism (f=12) and courage (f=10) are foremost among the values that makes Turks, Turks, think that Turks left warrior spirit and spread fear in the world, think that Turks are barely valued in the world (f=20) currently, however they take pride in being a Turk (f=30). The elements such as our glorious past, dignity and personality appear foremost among the elements which they take pride in.
