Özet: The high speed developments in technology and the rise in production and rivalry increases the threat in safety and health of the workers. In the 20th century which is significant for industrialization and new production methods, an increase in occupational accidents and job illnesses caused by dense mechanization has come into forefront[1]. Occupational accidents have been a significant problem in Turkey as it is all over the world. According to the statistics of Ministry of Labor and Social Security (SGK) there have been 64316 occupational accidents and 429 job illnesses in 2009 in Turkey. 1171 of these resulted in death while 1885 workers have been unable to work due to these accidents. In 2009 there has been a loss of 1533749 labor day caused by the accidents [2]. According to the standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO), the total cost of occupational accidents and job illnesses in 2009 is approximately 38 billion Turkish liras[3]. In the last few years as a result of the increase in the studies of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) over the country, there has been a considerable decrease in the number of occupational accidents[2]. However, when compared to the developed countries, it is evident that Turkey is not at a good position in terms of job safety, the number of occupational accidents and death events[3]. In this study, the accidents throughout Turkey have been analyzed according to SGK data and in terms of different parameters used by international statisticians .Furthermore Turkey and some other developed countries have been compared in order to see the position of Turkey in the world on account of occupational accidents.
