Özet: The importance of the consequences of work accidents and occupational diseases, the magnitude of material and spiritual losses; the have needed to prevent work accidents and occupational diseases in advance, to destroy them at their source and to develop a standard at a contemporary level. The aim of this study is to emphasize the necessity and importance of occupational health and safety (OHS) practices and trainings in terms of employees. The universe of the research is the cleaning staff of Mersin University and the sample consisted of 185 cleaning staff working in Mersin University Campus in January-February 2018 and volunteering to participate in the study.. In order to measure the socio-demographic characteristics of cleaning workers and the information they possess about occupational risks and diseases; a questionnaire, including 28 questions was applied. In the statistics of the research, the answers given to the expressions used in the survey and the frequency and percentage distributions were given for the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants. It was observed that 58,4% of the participants were male workers, the majority of them were in the age range of 30-50 (69,8%) and primary school graduates (54,6%) and working in the school environment (77,3%). It is also found that 30.3% of them work more than 10 years in the same job. As a result of frequency distribution analyzes; "Knowing that I need to have the necessary tests and vaccinations in terms of infectious diseases", "Using the glove to protect against chemical substances and infections","Knowing the health risks that medical wastes can create" such as in these subject; approximately 80% of the employees answered conscientiously. %72,4% answered as "I usually put a warning sign on wet floors" and 41,1% answered as "I have fallen on wet floors before". In this study, it was concluded that cleaning workers were aware of OHS regulations but OHS application awareness was not sufficiently assimilated. It should not be forgotten that employees, as well as businesses, need to be conscious of the importance of the OHS concept and education on the subject will preserve the health.
