Özet: Generally acclaimed use of money includes something physical; a banknote, coin or a credit card today. Since 2009, there has been a new money type named “Digital Money” though; and one of the most widely known of them is Bitcoin. These virtual money like Bitcoin came up to replace today’s physical money and became a candidate of a new type of payment concept. They are created by computers and kept in digital folders that are measured by kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes. It is true to say that they have advantages; however, they are coming with certain disadvantages and some other problems too. In this article, we will deal with some points including how this digital/virtual money types -and the widely known Bitcoin- come up, some advantages and disadvantages of them and whether they can be used in international trade or not. Finally, we will write about if this virtual money or Bitcoin is a new tool for laundering of illicit money or not; and is there a necessity to take any precautions against these virtual currencies for figting with money laundering
