Özet: Aim: Drug intoxication is common problem and sometimes it can be a life threatening emergency. Easy use of peritoneal dialysis make it a better choice in the treatment of serious intoxications. But low drug elemination by peritoneal route is limited its use. İontophoresis is a method that provide increase penetration of electrically charged molecules through different membrans by using electricity. We evaluated the effect of iontophoresis on peritoneal dialysis in an experimental model of phenytoin intoxication. Materials and method: Rabbits in both groups; control group (n=5) and iontophoresis group (IO) (n=5) applied peritoneal dialysis and compared for their phenytoin clerences and the phenytoin levels both in plasma and dialysate. Results: Phenytoin clerences calculated 0.36 ml/min in control group and 77 ml/min in IO group (p<0,02). Plasma phenytoin level in control and IO group was 60.60 μcg/ml and 31.28 μg/ml (p<0.02) , dialysate fenitoin level was 5.76 μcg/ml and 10.05 μcg/ml (p<0.02) at the end of dialysis. Conclusions: The result of this study establish that iontophoresis has improve peritoneal dialysis of phenytoin. But understanding the effect of iontophoresis on peritoneal membran needs further examination with different molecules. İontophoresis seems as a novel about peritoneal dialysis treatment of intoxication.
